Tracking routine

Track Subscription Spend Month Over Month

A small monthly habit can prevent subscriptions from quietly growing. Scan, save a snapshot, compare, and review a few items each month at a pace that feels comfortable.

Quick answer

  • Run one scan each month.
  • Export a snapshot.
  • Compare your totals and flagged changes.
  • Review one to three items, then rerun.

Educational purposes only; not financial advice. Examples are illustrative and results depend on your data; they are not guaranteed. Tracking is for awareness and planning; you decide what changes to make.

Your data is processed to detect recurring patterns; see the Privacy Policy for details.

The 10 minute monthly routine

  1. Export last month's statement as CSV (or use paste).
  2. Run the detector.
  3. Record three numbers: current spend, cancelable waste, projected after cleanup.
  4. Export PDF or CSV as your snapshot.
  5. Add one note: what changed since last month.

How to compare exports

Compare totals month to month, look for new recurring merchants, price changes, and potential duplicates. This keeps patterns visible before they grow.

Milestones and targets (choose your own)

Set a range that fits your budget, such as keeping subscription spend under X to Y percent of take-home or below a number you are comfortable with. This is for awareness, not a rule.

My range: __________ to __________ per month (or % of take-home)

Manual log template

Month,Current spend,Cancelable waste,Projected after cleanup,Notes
2025-10,,,,
2025-11,,,,
2025-12,,,,

Copy to a spreadsheet and fill it each month. This is illustrative; adjust months as you prefer.

Saved scenarios (if available)

If your tool supports saved scenarios, save a baseline and a after-cleanup version to compare next month. If not, keep two exports (before and after) for the same month in your log.

Keep it light

  • Do not try to fix everything at once.
  • Pick one recurring item per month to review.
  • Schedule a weekly 2-minute glance for new trials.

Weekly check in: see the routine.

Common pitfalls

  • Comparing months with different statement windows.
  • Forgetting annual renewals.
  • Treating the estimate as exact.
  • Making changes without confirming the merchant.

FAQ

How often should I run the detector?

Monthly is a simple cadence; weekly if you are testing changes.

What if my spend jumps one month?

Check for annual renewals, new trials, or price changes. Compare to last month's export.

What about yearly subscriptions?

Include enough history to see renewals and consider the monthly equivalent when tracking.

What if I share a family plan?

Note who uses it and whether a change affects others before acting.

How do I track price hikes?

Compare the same merchant's amount across months. A small increase can signal a change.

Are results guaranteed?

No. Estimates depend on your data and need confirmation.

What should I do first if I feel overwhelmed?

Pick one item to review this month, note the change, and rerun next month.

Final call to action

Run a monthly scan, log your numbers, and review a few items; small steps keep subscriptions in check.
